Dorsalgia: Causas síntomas y tratamientos para el dolor

What is back pain: causes, symptoms and treatments

He Back pain It is one of the ailments that most affects society today. Poor postural habits, a sedentary lifestyle and desk jobs are factors that significantly contribute to these problems, generating an increase in medical consultations with specialists.

Within these ailments, we can find different types and locations. In this article, we will talk about the ailment that affects the dorsal region technically known as backgia.

que es la dorsalgia

That Is it back pain?

The term back pain refers to all pain that manifests in the dorsal area of the back. Anatomically. This area is located at the back of the ribs, behind the shoulders and shoulder blades, at the level of the thoracic region of the spine.

More than 50% of the adult population suffers from this ailment which can affect one or both sides of the back. Back pain can be classified into two types:

  • Mechanical back pain: occurs when pain occurs during activity or movement in the affected area.
  • Inflammatory back pain: this type of pain occurs when the affected person is at rest.

Likewise, either of the two types can be classified as chronic back pain when pain persists for a prolonged period of time.

Types of back pain

There are two main classifications of back pain, each with its specific characteristics and causes. These include structural and functional back pain.

Structural back pain

Structural back pain comprises of main types. On the one hand, there is rigid back pain, which affects elderly people and is associated with osteoarthritis. On the other hand, there is flexible back pain, which affects people who have little curvature in the spine and usually presents with less stiffness, but with greater variability in the intensity of the pain.

Functional back pain

Functional back pain is divided into two categories. There is mechanical back pain, which occurs when the affected area is active or in motion, being common in workers such as repetitive movements, lifting weights or prolonged postures, and inflammatory back pain, which occurs when the affected person is at rest and may be related to chronic inflammatory diseases.

Either type can lead to a chronic back pain when pain persists for a prolonged period of time.

Causes of back pain

The dorsal area is made up of multiple muscular structures, so it is generally difficult to find the origin(s) of the pain.

Taking this into account we can identify several causes that can give rise to contractures and pain in the dorsal region.

  • Stress: it is scientifically proven that Stress and negative emotions produce muscle tension, as a reflex action to protect our body. Therefore, to release the stress that we are subjected to daily It is important to do physical activity, stretching, and physical and mental relaxation exercises..
  • Bad posture: when you maintain poor posture for a prolonged period of time, the muscles become overworked and generate muscle contractures. Therefore it is important itry to maintain postural hygiene habits healthy on a daily basis and practice exercises to strengthen the spine.
  • Due to exposure to cold: in winter it is common for muscle pain to arise due to contractures due to being shrunken by the cold.
  • Spinal malformations: small ones deviations in the spine caused by scoliosis can be responsible for back pain, especially when for some reason this deformity is accentuated. To avoid this, it is necessary to consult with a specialist to ensure that scoliosis does not worsen over time.
  • Herniated discs: wear and tear of the vertebral discs can generate bone spurs and friction of the vertebral bones, causing pain in the affected area.

Symptoms of back pain

The term back pain is not a disease, but is used to refer to a symptom that affects the interscapular area of the back. That is, back pain is a symptom in itself that manifests itself as a result of some adjacent problem.

This back pain symptom It is described as a dull pain that is felt more frequently at times of rest, in certain postures and, generally, at the end of the day, which is relieved by exerting strong pressure on the affected area.

Difference between dorsalgia and other back injuries

Dorsal pain is different from other back injuries such as low back pain and neck pain, which are identified and differentiated by their location. Dorsal pain refers to pain in the middle of the back, while low back pain refers to pain in the lower back, and neck pain refers to pain in the neck.

Each of these conditions, with its unique characteristics, requires different types of preventative exercises and recovery treatments. That's why it's crucial to consult a specialized physical therapist for a proper diagnosis and effective short- and long-term recovery.

Treatment to cure back pain

The treatment of back pain can be divided into three main stages:

Momentary pain relief:

The most important thing when going to a specialist for pain is to try to solve the problem momentarily to improve the patient's situation while looking for the root causes that are causing the pain.

At this point, conservative palliative treatments are usually recommended, such as the use of analgesics and muscle relaxants, as well as decontracting massages performed by a back pain specialist physiotherapist.

Diagnosis and treatment of the origin of back pain

Secondly, but no less important, it is essential to find the cause of pain. Once the origin is found, definitive treatment can be recommended.

Rehabilitation

We must not forget that rehabilitation is essential to fully recover. There is no complete recovery for the patient until he or she completes the complete rehabilitation recommended by his or her doctor. trauma doctor or specialist physiotherapist.

Exercises to relieve back pain

Back pain can be relieved through some simple exercises. These exercises help strengthen your back muscles and improve flexibility:

  • Cat and Cow Stretch: This exercise helps improve spinal flexibility and relieve tension in the back muscles. To do it, you must be on all fours, with your hands aligned under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Inhaling, you should begin to arch your back downward, raising your head and buttocks. Then, as you exhale, you should round your back upward, tucking your chin toward your chest.
  • Bridge: The bridge is an effective exercise for strengthening the muscles of the lower back. To do it, you must be lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet supported and aligned with your hips. You should raise your hips towards the ceiling for a few seconds, squeezing your glutes and abdominal muscles, and then slowly descend to the floor. It is recommended to perform this exercise between 10 and 15 times.
  • Hamstring stretch– This stretch helps reduce tension in your lower back and leg muscles. To do it, you must be with one leg extended and the other bent, with the foot resting against the inside of the thigh of the extended leg. Then, you have to lean forward from the hips, keeping your back straight, for at least 20 seconds, and repeat 2 or 3 times per leg.

Although these exercises can help relieve back pain, it is essential to consult with a doctor before starting any routine.

How to prevent back pain in everyday life

To prevent back pain and maintain good health, it's important to maintain certain postures. Stretching in the morning and at night to maintain traction in the back is essential to mobilize the area and prevent stiffness. This can be complemented by postural awareness and ergonomics at work, such as adjusting chair, desk, and monitor heights to avoid additional strain.

Incorporating 45-60 minute active breaks is key to avoiding muscle strain and sudden injuries due to a sedentary lifestyle. Exercising your middle and upper back can be very effective in strengthening your muscles through a weekly routine.

Finally, choosing the right mattress and pillow at bedtime helps provide complete care for the area and effectively prevent future injuries.

When to see a doctor for back pain

Seeing a doctor for back pain is crucial when it persists for more than a few weeks, increases in intensity, and does not improve with rest.

If back pain persists and does not improve after rest or self-massage, or if there is tingling, weakness, or pain radiating to the arms or chest, the injury is likely serious enough to require professional treatment. Furthermore, if the pain manifests as nighttime pain that interrupts sleep, or if there is a history of trauma or accident to the spine, medical attention is definitely necessary.

It is important not to self-medicate and to seek professional treatment for any such ailment, thus avoiding serious injuries.

Advanced treatments for chronic back pain

Advanced treatments can make a difference in recovery and quality of life for patients with chronic back pain. Physical therapy with manual therapy techniques helps release and reduce accumulated tension in the back muscles. In more severe cases, shock waves or electrotherapy act as a complement to stimulate regeneration and relieve pain.

In addition, personalized rehabilitation programs, designed and supervised by a physical therapist, ensure effective recovery for each patient.

Finally, comprehensive postural re-education is key to correcting habits and preventing relapses, thereby strengthening muscles and improving spinal alignment.

      • Good morning, I just wanted to make a note.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a pathology that never affects the dorsal or lumbar spine. Only in some cases can it affect the cervical spine, in the form of atlantoaxial subluxation. It never affects the rest of the spine, it does not generate inflammation in the thoracic spine. I would ask you to correct this since it gives rise to confusion in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who later come to us at the Rheumatology consultation stating that their pathology has affected the dorsal or lumbar spine. Thank you.

  16. Hello. I wanted to ask something. I have upper back pain problems. This started last March. I went to the doctor and he told me to change my posture when sitting. I take painkillers that relieve me and the discomfort returns and sometimes with stretching it goes away but it still comes back. At first it started from the neck down like a tension in the upper back, however it comes back and forth. I haven't had a fever or any strange discomfort. Of course, I'm finishing a treatment for Helycobacter. Does that have anything to do with my discomfort?

MRI is a very precise tool for analyzing both bones and soft tissues, and may provide additional information about the cause of your pain. I would recommend that you consult with your doctor or a spine specialist to assess whether this study is necessary, based on the evolution of your symptoms and your medical history.

Thank you for your comment. Burning and pain in the area between the shoulder blades and the spine may be related to muscle tension, overuse, or even a postural problem. However, given that these symptoms have persisted for several months, it would be advisable to have your case evaluated by a specialist to determine the cause and guide the appropriate treatment. If you wish, you can schedule an appointment with our team for a personalized evaluation. You can contact us at +34 91 005 39 00.
