Causes, symptoms and treatments of spinal tumors

What is a spinal tumor?

A spinal tumor It involves the growth of an abnormal mass of cells that affects the structure of the spinal column.

It is a pathology that must be taken very seriously, whether the tumor is cancerous or a benign spinal tumor, since it can affect the spinal cord and nearby nerve endings, with serious health consequences.

In the presence of a vertebral neoplasm, it is crucial to go to a qualified professional early to obtain an early diagnosis and receive the most appropriate treatment for each case.

Síntomas de un tumor vertebral

Types of spinal tumor

Tumors of the spine can occur within the spinal cord or in the dura mater, the covering of the spinal cord. It is also possible for the tumor to affect the bones of the spine.

The Primary tumors, which originate in the spinal column itself, represent a large minority of cases.

Between the bone tumors, which can originate in the spine, These include chordoma, chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma, and Ewing's sarcoma. The tumor may also form within the spinal cord.

Most commonly, vertebral tumors are of metastatic origin, meaning they originate in another part of the body and spread to the spine.

Symptoms of a spinal tumor

As a spinal tumor grows, it can trigger a range of symptoms as it may affect the spinal cord, nerve roots, or bones and blood vessels surrounding the spine.

Among the most common symptoms we find:

  • Pain in the spine, which gets worse when sleeping.
  • Pain in the tumor area.
  • Loss of sensitivity in arms, legs and joints.
  • Dificulty to walk.
  • Reduced sensitivity to pain, heat or cold.
  • Intestinal and urinary incontinence.
  • Paralysis of different areas of the body.

The symptoms resulting from spinal cord compression may be similar to those that occur in other pathologies, such as a herniated disc or spinal canal stenosis. For this reason, it is important to consult a trusted professional at the first signs of the disease, since early detection of the tumor is of vital importance.

How do you know if it is a hernia or a tumor?

Differentiating between a herniated disc and a spinal tumor can be difficult, as both can present with similar symptoms, such as back pain, weakness in the limbs, and sensitivity problems. It is crucial to note that if any spinal pathology is suspected, patients should seek specialized clinics rather than attempt to self-diagnose.

A medical professional, through examinations and diagnostic tests, will be able to accurately determine the cause of the symptoms, differentiating between a hernia and a tumor.

Consequences of a spinal tumor

The compression of the spinal cord and nerves caused by a tumor can cause loss of sensitivity and movement of the limbs, and can even be fatal in some cases.

An early diagnosis of any suspicious symptoms is very important, although most of them are probably due to more common pathologies.

¿Qué es un tumor vertebral_

What causes spinal tumors?

Most of these tumors are metastases in the spine of neoplasms that have originated in other parts of the body, such as the breasts, prostate or lungs. Although any type of tumor is susceptible to spreading to the spine.

Primary tumors of the spine, which originate directly in this area, are very rare. The exact causes of these tumors are still unknown, although defective genes are suspected to play a major role. It is not yet clear whether these gene defects are inherited, appear over time, or are related to environmental factors.

People who have had cancer are more likely to develop a tumor in the spine.

Possible complications of a tumor in the spine

Spinal tumors can irritate the nerves in the spine, which can cause loss of sensation, movement or failure of the bladder and sphincters to function. This damage can be irreversible.

On the other hand, the structures of the spine themselves can also be damaged, which can cause instability, fractures or serious damage to the spinal cord.

Early diagnosis is crucial to minimize the sequelae of spinal tumors.

How is a spinal tumor diagnosed?

It's fundamental go to the doctor at the first symptoms, since this type of tumor can be confused with more common pathologies.

To confirm the diagnosis of a vertebral tumor, require tests such as an MRI of the spinal cord, a computed tomography (CT) scan, or a biopsy.

Tratamiento de tumor en la columna

Spinal tumor treatment

Treatment of vertebral tumors is focused on their complete removal. However, this is not always easy due to the position of this type of tumor, close to the spinal cord and adjacent nerves.

Doctors will also evaluate a number of factors before deciding on the most appropriate treatment for each case, such as the type of tumor, the patient's medical history, and their age.

Surgery for a tumor in the spine

One of the most common treatments is surgery to remove the tumor, sometimes accompanied by radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

A surgical technique that can be used to treat spinal tumors is lumbar arthrodesis, in which two vertebrae are permanently fused together. Stabilization or fusion helps control pain caused by fractured vertebrae due to tumors. Affected vertebrae may also need to be removed.

Can a spinal tumor be prevented?

Preventing spinal tumors can be complicated, but Early diagnosis is the best strategy for taking care of your back. The consequences of vertebral tumors can be devastating, so action must be taken as quickly as possible.

Vertebral tumors can have very serious consequences due to their close connection with the spinal cord. If any symptoms or suspicions arise, Go to a specialist quickly. Early diagnosis is your best ally.

  15. I have had acute lower back pain for approximately two years on the left side that radiates to the thigh and groin. It hurts when walking, standing, sitting, all the time. I feel numbness in my leg and this leg is larger with edema, I feel like I'm vomiting, I have no strength in my hands to grip objects, and so far I have not discovered what it is. At my last check-up with my general doctor he told me: Pain on palpation in the paraspinal region from L3 to S1, as well as in the left gluteus, on the posterior side of the thigh to the middle third, positive Lassegue sign on the left.
Patient with the described history, now presenting with symptoms suggestive of lumbago with symptoms of radiculopathy, for which a specialist opinion is requested for a possible imaging study,
At the moment I am giving neuromodulator.

    • Hello Laura,
Your symptoms, including radiating pain, numbness, and swelling, suggest radiculopathy, possibly from nerve compression. A positive Lasegue sign reinforces this suspicion. It is crucial that you have an MRI to identify the cause, such as a herniated disc. Consult a spine specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment. Your concern is understandable. A nodule in S2 could be related to neurological or musculoskeletal symptoms. I suggest you consult a neurologist first to evaluate possible nervous causes. My name Aurelia is 27 years old, 1 year old and 3 months later, after receiving my two children on my discovery, they will have a mass in the vertebral colon with a fractured spine (fractured) and they will be hospitalized for urgency and two weeks plus. Afterwards, I was informed that the tumor was compressed by the cellulose and finally paralyzed by the tumor that compressed the spinal cord.

The most serious illnesses like cancer.

Pour faire la distinction, it is essential that a specialist examine your magnetic resonance images and evaluate your neurological examination (force, reflexes, sensitivity). Sometimes, it is possible to confirm whether your symptoms correspond to a herniated disc or whether there is another cause necessary for different investigations.

      Greetings.
