Clinical case
Kyphoplasty in Madrid. Patient with L1 lumbar fracture
Preoperative
Once the imaging tests were performed, they showed a wedging fracture of the 1st L1 lumbar vertebra without affecting the posterior wall and with signs of acute edema. It was decided to perform a kyphoplasty.
Operation
Kyphoplasty consists of a surgical treatment with a ultra-minimally invasive technique, where the vertebra is re-expanded and subsequently cemented to restore its height as well as strengthen it.
The patient in a prone position (lying face down) and under local anesthesia with a little sedation, the vertebral body is re-expanded, restoring the original height of the vertebra and subsequently using orthopedic cement, the body is stabilized.
The wounds are minimal (approximately 2 milliliters) and are subsequently sutured with stitches that do not need to be removed.
Postoperative
With this technique, recovery is practically immediate.
The pain disappears immediately.
The surgical risk in expert hands is minimal and the results are long-lasting.
Kyphoplasty is a technique that gives very good results, but it is very complex and requires spine specialist trauma doctors for its execution.
